Why Southeast Asia Is the Ultimate eSIM Destination
Southeast Asia has some of the fastest-improving mobile networks in the world. Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia have all made significant 5G investment in urban areas, while even rural coverage has expanded dramatically since 2022. The result: a region where you can be genuinely connected almost everywhere — from Bangkok's Sukhumvit to the rice paddies of Chiang Mai, from Kuta Beach to the temples of Angkor Wat.
This connectivity makes an eSIM not just a convenience but a genuine travel tool. Grab, the region's dominant super-app, covers food delivery, ride-hailing, and payments across Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia — and all of it runs on data. Without reliable mobile connectivity, navigating Southeast Asia gets dramatically harder.
At the same time, local SIM cards — while cheap — require passport registration in most SEA countries, a physical kiosk visit upon arrival, and a physical SIM swap that cuts you off from your home number. For multi-country travelers island-hopping across three or four nations in one trip, an eSIM that works everywhere is simply the smarter option.
The Southeast Asia eSIM market is fiercely competitive — which is good news for travelers. Karibu's Thailand plans start from just $4.00 for 1GB, with unlimited options from $9.50 for 3 days. Regional Asia plans cover Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Japan, South Korea, and more on a single plan.
Thailand: The Gateway
Thailand receives more international tourists than any other country in Southeast Asia, and its mobile network reflects that priority. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Koh Samui, and Koh Phangan all have strong 4G coverage and increasingly 5G in central areas. Rural areas in the north — the Golden Triangle, Pai, Mae Hong Son — are more variable but still generally serviceable on 3G.
Bangkok
Excellent 4G across all major areas. BTS Skytrain stations, malls, temples, and the riverfront all have strong signal. Grab works flawlessly. Google Maps is reliable. Uploading to social media from the rooftop bars on Sukhumvit is no issue.
Chiang Mai
Strong urban coverage, slightly patchier in the surrounding mountainous areas. The old city and Nimman district have excellent signal. Trekking areas north of the city — Doi Inthanon, Mae Taeng — can drop to 2G or nothing in remote valleys.
Islands — Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao
Island coverage is generally solid on the eastern Gulf coast islands (Samui, Phangan). Koh Tao is smaller and more variable. Phuket and Koh Phi Phi have excellent coverage near resorts; boat trips between islands will obviously drop signal.

Indonesia: Bali, Lombok & the Archipelago
Indonesia is 17,000 islands and counting — and mobile coverage varies enormously across them. Bali is fully 4G with pockets of 5G in Seminyak and Canggu. Lombok has solid coverage in Senggigi, Mataram, and the Gili Islands area. Komodo Island and the remote eastern archipelago is a different story.
Bali
Excellent connectivity across the south (Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud). The highlands around Bedugul and the northern coast are more variable. Uploading Bali content to Instagram or TikTok from any popular beach club is easy. A Karibu Asia regional plan covers Indonesia within the same plan as Thailand — no separate purchase needed for multi-country itineraries.
Gili Islands (near Lombok)
The Gilis have surprisingly decent 4G from the Lombok mainland towers — better than many expect. Gili Trawangan especially. Deep water dive boats lose signal obviously, but the island itself is well covered.
Multi-country tip: If you're combining Thailand with Bali (or Vietnam), Karibu's Asia regional plan covers both destinations on a single eSIM from $7.00 for 15 days. Far cheaper than buying two separate country plans.
Vietnam: North to South
Vietnam has invested heavily in mobile infrastructure and the results show. Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi both have strong 4G urban coverage. The tourist trail — Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue, Nha Trang, Ha Long Bay — is generally well covered.
Ha Long Bay cruise ships are an interesting case: the bay itself has surprisingly good signal on most cruise routes, served by towers on the surrounding karst islands. Even mid-cruise you can typically upload photos.
The northern mountain regions — Sapa, Ha Giang, the ethnic minority villages along the Chinese border — are more variable. Sapa town has solid coverage; the terraced rice field villages above it are patchier. Ha Giang is beautiful and mostly 3G with gaps.
Vietnam is included in Karibu's Asia regional plan, meaning a Thailand-Vietnam or Bali-Vietnam trip is covered on a single purchase.

Managing Your Data in Southeast Asia
- Use Grab for everything. Grab is the region's super-app — ride-hailing, food delivery, hotel bookings. It uses very little data and works on 3G. Download it before you land.
- Download offline maps for each destination. Google Maps offline works without any signal. Download your city maps while on hotel WiFi the night before you explore.
- Use Instagram and TikTok on WiFi only. Uploading short-form video is the biggest data drain for travel content creators. Do it from your guesthouse, not on mobile data.
- Set your streaming apps to download offline. Spotify playlists, Netflix downloads, and Kindle books all consume zero data once downloaded.
- Google Translate's camera mode uses data. Download the Thai, Indonesian, and Vietnamese language packs offline before arrival — they work without internet.
- Check your data balance after heavy days. Log in to your Karibu account to monitor usage. Unlimited plans don't need monitoring — but fixed plans do.

Does one Karibu eSIM work across Thailand, Bali, and Vietnam?
Yes — the Asia regional plan covers all three on a single eSIM. You don't need to purchase separately for each country. Your phone connects automatically to the best available network as you move between destinations.
What's the cheapest way to get data for a week in Thailand?
The 1GB / 7-day Thailand plan at $4.00 is the cheapest option — ideal if you'll be on hotel WiFi most of the time and just need data for Grab, maps, and WhatsApp. For heavier use, the Unlimited 7-day at $21.50 gives peace of mind.
Is 5G available in Thailand?
Yes in Bangkok and major urban areas. For most travel purposes — maps, social media, Grab, video calls — 4G is perfectly sufficient. You won't notice the difference.
Can I keep my home number active while using a Karibu eSIM?
Yes. Your physical home SIM stays in your phone and remains active for calls and SMS. The Karibu eSIM operates as a second line for data. You'll still receive banking OTPs and calls on your home number.
How do I install the eSIM?
After purchase, you'll receive a QR code by email. Go to Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM and scan the code. The process takes under 5 minutes. Install it at home before your trip for instant connectivity on arrival.
Is Indonesia (Bali) covered on the Asia regional plan?
Yes. Karibu's Asia regional plan covers Indonesia within the same plan as Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, South Korea, and Japan. One plan, one eSIM, the whole region.
